Whether you have a large or small business or gated community, you should ensure that everyone who enters your location is authorized.  The best way to stay secure is by using an access control system to limit who is permitted to enter your facility. An access control system combines physical barriers with electronic locks or gates controlled by a computer that responds to the credential presented by the person seeking entry. The credentials identify the person to the computer and the computer checks its database of people allowed to pass the access control point.

An access control point can be a door, turnstile, security gate, elevator, or other physical barrier that can be electrically controlled. Typically the access point is an electronic access control door thant contains several elements. The first element is an electric lock that is unlocked by a reader. The reader may be a keypad where a code is entered, barcode scanner, long range prox reader, transponder system, or a biometric reader. Readers do send the credentials to a computer that verifies the number against an access list. To monitor the door position a magnetic door switch is used that alerts the computer when the door is open. If the computer has valid credentials for the person, it ignores the door open warning, otherwise an alarm is sounded.

The credentials in an access control system is perhaps the most important  decision to make when designing your system. The credential is carried by authorized personnel and can consist of a simple pin number, an emloyee ID card with magnetic stripe, an RFID key fob, or biometric identification such as their fingerprint. In high security areas, a combination of credentials may be optimal, guarding against the possibility of a stolen card or key fob.
